A Home Away from Home: How Miika Eco Resort Became Hoima’s Premier Hospitality Destination

By Shamim Saad

Nestled along the scenic Hoima Butiaba Road, Miika Eco Resort Hotel has emerged as one of the leading hospitality destinations in Uganda’s Bunyoro sub-region. What began as a vision to provide world-class accommodation and leisure facilities in Hoima has grown into a thriving tourism and hospitality investment that continues to attract both local and international visitors.

Established in 2016 and located on Plot 367, Kayiso-Tonya-Butiaba Road, Miika Eco Resort was founded by Dr Fred Kabagambe-Kaliisa and being managed by Director, Herbert Araali Kaliisa Tusiime with a mission to bridge a significant gap in Hoima’s hospitality sector.

Today, the resort boasts a modern eco-friendly facility featuring comfortable accommodation, conference facilities, a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, children’s play area, beautifully landscaped gardens, and recreational amenities that offer guests an exceptional experience.

With an actual investment of USD 1.59 million and a workforce of 175 employees, the resort has become a significant contributor to employment and tourism development in the region. Of these employees, 90 are women and 85 are men, reflecting the company’s commitment to inclusive growth and job creation.

A vision born from opportunity

According to the Kaliisa, the inspiration to invest in hospitality stemmed from a clear need within the region.

“Back in the day, Hoima did not have facilities that could provide the level of accommodation and leisure experiences that visitors expected. We decided to invest so that both international and local guests could enjoy quality services while creating a place where families and communities could come together and have a good time.”

As a native of Bunyoro, Kaliisa saw an opportunity to build a facility that would not only serve visitors but also elevate the region’s tourism profile.

“Being born and raised in Bunyoro gave me the confidence that we could establish a facility of this standard here at home. We wanted to create a place that offered excellent service, quality food, and high standards of hygiene because those are the things that make guests feel at home.”

Building a lasting investment

Like many ambitious ventures, Miika Eco Resort faced significant financial hurdles during its development phase. Rather than rushing construction, the management adopted a gradual growth strategy that prioritized sustainability.

“We faced challenges with capital, but we found different ways of raising funds. We built the facility in phases rather than all at once. In fact, it took us six years to fully establish the resort because we wanted to create something that would last for generations.”

This patient and strategic approach has enabled the resort to continuously improve its facilities while maintaining financial stability.

Driving tourism and employment

Over the years, Miika Eco Resort has become a preferred destination for tourists, business travelers, conferences, and family getaways. Guests enjoy modern rooms with garden-view balconies, recreational facilities, and a tranquil environment that combines luxury with nature.

The resort’s commitment to quality has earned national recognition, including the Eco Hospitality Award from the Ministry of Tourism and the Employee of the Year Award from the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE).

Support from Uganda Investment Authority (UIA)

Kaliisa credits the UIA for playing a significant role in supporting investors and helping businesses navigate challenges.

“Having UIA readily available to support us has been extremely helpful. Their guidance and commitment to addressing investor challenges have made a significant difference throughout our journey.”

He also highlights the importance of government incentives in supporting growth within the hospitality sector.

“VAT exemptions on hotel-related items have been particularly beneficial. Many of the items we import are expensive, so these incentives help us continue improving our facilities and delivering better services.”

Expanding for the future

Miika Eco Resort is currently implementing several strategic projects aimed at enhancing guest experiences and increasing its competitiveness.

Plans include completing a modern gym and wellness centre, renovating guest rooms with improved soundproofing, upgrading kitchen facilities with modern equipment, and expanding conference facilities capable of hosting weddings, corporate events, and social functions.

The company is also nearing completion of Miika Botanical Inn in Entebbe, a complementary nine-room facility designed to strengthen the resort’s marketing network and provide seamless hospitality experiences for travelers arriving through Entebbe International Airport.

“Miika Botanical Inn will support our Hoima operations by receiving clients arriving through Entebbe before they proceed to their final destination. We believe this will significantly strengthen our hospitality network.”

Looking further ahead, the company has acquired land near Hoima Airport where it plans to develop a new resort and golf course, positioning itself to benefit from the region’s growing tourism and business opportunities.

A growing investment

The value of Miika Eco Resort continues to rise as new facilities are added.

“The facility was previously valued at approximately UGX 6 billion, and since then we have added new developments such as a health club, steam sauna, massage services, and a gym, all of which continue to increase the value of the investment.”

With revenues steadily growing and expansion plans underway, the resort stands as a testament to the potential of long-term investment in Uganda’s tourism and hospitality sector.

A message to prospective investors

For Kaliisa, Uganda remains one of Africa’s most attractive investment destinations.

“Uganda is safe, welcoming, and full of opportunities. We have a wonderful institution in the UIA that helps investors establish and grow their businesses. I implore investors from around the world to explore Uganda’s diverse opportunities and allow UIA to guide them throughout their investment journey.”

From a bold vision in Bunyoro to an award-winning hospitality destination, Miika Eco Resort demonstrates how determination, strategic investment, and strong institutional support can create lasting economic impact while transforming communities and contributing to Uganda’s tourism growth story.
