Uganda announces new areas for oil exploration

By David Rupiny

Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has announced three new areas for oil and gas exploration measuring 2,244 square miles.

Moroto-Kadam Basin in northeastern Uganda – measuring 672 square kilometres;

Lake Kyoga Basin in the centre of Uganda – measuring 831 square kilometres; and

Hoima Basin in Midwestern Uganda – measuring 741 square kilometres

The announcement was made in accordance to section 47(5) of the Petroleum (Exploration, Development and Production) Act, 2013.

The basins where geological surveys have revealed possibilities of the existence of oil and gas deposits cover 26 districts which will be open to investors in oil exploration.

Oil development is already taking place in the two active basins of Kingfisher and Tilenga, all in the Lake Albert Basin.

First Oil is now projected for 2027, and not 2025 as earlier announced.

Construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline – from Kikuube in Uganda to Tanga Port in Tanzania – has also started.
