The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has invited investors to take an interest in indigenous knowledge that is leading to alternative treatments for diseases with the potential of helping humanity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Aga Khan University and Aga Khan Teaching Hospital in Kampala on September 11, the President said Ugandan researchers are having breakthroughs in the treatment of diseases like diabetes, cancer, and malaria, among others.

The President said the Aga Khan institutions, as well as other investors, need to partner with Ugandan researchers and scale up their therapies for the benefit of humanity.

President Museveni stressed the importance of the private sector in driving development, adding that the investment climate in Uganda is good. “We are ready and we can work very well together”, he said.

The Government of Uganda is prioritizing investments in the pathogenic sector, and many investment projects and innovations are being introduced. Investment in the sector also comes with generous incentives.

His Highness the Aga Khan V thanked the government for providing the Aga Khan University and Hospital with land, saying the investments will bring education and health services closer to the needy.

Said the Aga Khan V: “I would like to begin by conveying my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency for providing the university with an exceptional site for this campus and for your steadfast vision and enduring support for this project. I also express my heartfelt appreciation for the enabling environment that the Government of Uganda has created for the Aga Khan Development Network”.
