Why Uganda-South Africa?
One of the fastest growing FDI for Uganda. The summit is organized by The Uganda High Commission in Pretoria in partnership with Uganda Investment Authority, PSFU, PACEID, UTB, Uganda Airlines, UMA, Department of Trade and Industry of South Africa, Department of Public Enterprises, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Department of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (DIRCO) Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives of Uganda, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
South Africa is one of the fastest-growing sources of Foreign Direct Investment for Uganda as South Africa’s exports to Uganda increased in total value from R2.18 billion in 2017 to R3.11 billion in 2018, then recorded a notable decrease in 2019 (R1.35 billion) before showing an increase in 2021 (R1.80 billion). South African investments include areas like telecommunications, Breweries, Finance, poultry, energy, and many others.
Key Trade Statistics
During the period 2017 – 2021, the total value of bilateral trade between South Africa and Uganda fluctuated but it notably reached over R3 billion in 2018. The total value of South Africa’s imports from Uganda also increased from R127 million in 2017 to R323 million in 2020, before recording a decrease of R268 million in 2021. The bulk of the trade has remained extremely in favor of South Africa.
Uganda’s exports to South Africa include cotton, gold, fish fillets, tobacco, coffee, and fresh flowers. South Africa’s exports include machinery, vehicles, plastics, chemicals, electronics, parts and accessories, petroleum, live animals, books and newsprint, textiles, footwear, aircraft, and household goods. South Africa could strengthen links in several areas including information technology, health services, Agri and agro-processing, biotechnology, and chemicals.
