Industrial milestone: Mehta Group celebrates 100 years in Uganda

Mehta Group, a Ugandan conglomerate renowned for establishing the first sugar factory in Uganda, is 100 years old.

The group started as a sugar factory – Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited – in 1924 by the late Nanji Kalidas Mehta, who had earlier arrived in Uganda aged just 13 years.

In addition to sugar, Mehta Group, also produces electrical cables, 15 megawatts of power from biogas, ethanol, biofertilizers, roses, paint, cement and building materials, and packaging materials.

Its portfolio also includes financial services, engineering, international trade, and consultancy.

In addition to Uganda, its operations extend to the United States, India, Kenya and other African countries.

Mehta Group held its centennial anniversary on October 12, 2024, in Lugazi in central Uganda, where its sugar plantation and industries are located. The celebrations were presided over by President Yoweri Museveni and the First Lady, Janet Museveni.

President Museveni congratulated the Mehta Group for their resilience, determination, and loyalty to Uganda.

Said the President: “On behalf of Uganda and that of the National Resistance Movement, I want to thank and congratulate the Mehtas on two counts: Number one, the elder Mehta (Nanji) who pioneered the sugar industry in Uganda in 1924. I thank him and congratulate him. I also congratulate Mzee Mehta who came to Uganda in 1952 after his studies in India and started engaging in the group’s business. That is 72 years now, a good contribution”.

President Museveni directed that petroleum companies should start blending imported fuel with locally produced biofuel.

The President also said he would not allow the importation of electric cables because they are being produced locally in huge quantities using local raw materials. He also pledged to support Mehta’s horticulture and floriculture businesses.

The First Lady commended Mehta Group for its philanthropic works like running a hospital and many dispensaries and schools.

The patriarch of the Mehta Group, Mahendra Mehta, thanked the President for creating a conducive and enabling environment for Mehta and other industries to thrive.
