The inaugural Uganda Diaspora Convention aimed at attracting investment back home has taken place in the Malawian capital of Lilongwe.
The convention, organized by the Ugandan High Commission in Tanzania, attracted Ugandans living and working in Malawi and neighbouring countries in southern Africa.
Hope Waira, Senior Investment Executive at the Uganda Investment Authority, urged the Ugandan Diaspora to invest back home by snapping the various opportunities in sectors like commercial agriculture, agro-industrialisation, mineral development, tourism development, science, technology, and innovation, ICT, real estate, and services like education, healthcare, and hospitality.
Waira reported that UIA, as an Investor One-Stop Centre www.ebiz.go.ug is on hand to support the Ugandan Diaspora in setting up businesses and investments.
She said the Ugandan Government offers various tax and non-tax incentives for investors and have streamlined business processed to ensure competitive returns for investors.
Waira called on Ugandans abroad to leverage these mechanisms and the conducive environment to advance foreign direct investment and contribute to Uganda’s economic statecraft and prosperity.
Robert Tugume, from the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provided an overview of the consular services extended to Ugandans in the diaspora. He emphasized that the Department works in close collaboration with Uganda’s Missions Abroad to ensure the continued protection and welfare of Ugandan nationals abroad.
