Chinese investors visit Uganda’s biggest gold mine

By David Rupiny

A high-level delegation of Chinese investors has visited the Wagagai Gold Mines in eastern Uganda. The gold mine and refinery are located in Busia on the border with Kenya.

Accompanied by Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Oliver Wonekha, the Chinese delegation was briefed by the General Manager, Lee, on the project’s progress since inception. He reported that they project to produce 1.2 tonnes of refined gold annually.

The facility has created over 2,000 jobs for Ugandans and provided training for more than 700 local technical staff, contributing significantly to economic development, skills transfer, and community development—highlighted as a win-win partnership between Uganda and China.
