As the sun rises over the mighty River Nile and wildlife stirs within the vast wilderness of Murchison Falls National Park, Murchison River Lodge comes to life. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and the sounds of nature, the lodge has become more than just a place for travelers to stay, it is a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and investment in Uganda’s tourism sector.

Located in Mubako, Ngwedo Sub-County in Buliisa District, Murchison River Lodge began as a modest safari accommodation venture driven by a passion for showcasing Uganda’s natural beauty. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the country’s leading eco-tourism destinations, welcoming visitors from across the globe while creating jobs, supporting local communities, and contributing to the growth of the regional economy.

Licensed by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) in July 2017, the lodge has far exceeded its initial investment projections, transforming into a multi-million-dollar enterprise. Its journey reflects not only the resilience of its founders but also the vast opportunities that Uganda offers investors seeking to tap into one of Africa’s most promising tourism markets.
Turning passion into investment
For Managing Director Chris Higginson, investing in Uganda was a natural progression of a lifelong passion for tourism and adventure.

Having first travelled to Africa in 1995 and spent years leading safari expeditions across East Africa, Higginson developed a deep appreciation for Uganda’s unique tourism potential. After settling in Uganda more than two decades ago, he recognized an opportunity that few investors had fully explored.
“Tourism has been very attractive to invest in Uganda. Compared to other East African countries, there is still enormous room for development and growth. The opportunities are here, and the benefits of investing in Uganda continue to expand,” says Higginson.
He believes Uganda’s distinctive character gives it a competitive advantage in the tourism market.
“The lack of a colonial package makes Uganda unique. It offers a more authentic experience, and that makes life and travel here far more enjoyable and rewarding.”
Growing beyond expectations
The lodge initially planned to invest approximately USD 300,000 in the project. Through continuous expansion and reinvestment, the actual investment has grown to over USD 1.8 million.
Over the years, Murchison River Lodge has evolved into a premier safari destination offering comfortable accommodation, breathtaking views of the Nile, and close encounters with some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife.
The facility currently employs 70 staff members, including 68 Ugandans and two expatriates. Of these employees, 40 are women and 28 are men, demonstrating the lodge’s commitment to local employment and community development.

An immersive wildlife experiences
What sets Murchison River Lodge apart is its seamless integration with nature. Surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Murchison Falls National Park, the lodge offers guests an authentic safari experience without compromising comfort.

Visitors enjoy spacious and well-appointed bandas, spectacular views of the Nile River, and the opportunity to observe abundant birdlife and wildlife in their natural habitat. The lodge’s carefully designed facilities allow guests to experience the wilderness while enjoying modern amenities and exceptional hospitality.
The property’s restaurant and lounge areas overlook the river, creating memorable dining experiences against one of Uganda’s most picturesque backdrops. For many visitors, the thrill of being escorted between accommodation units and communal areas at night due to the presence of hippos and other wildlife becomes one of the most unforgettable aspects of their stay.

Support from Uganda Investment Authority
Higginson credits the UIA for providing valuable support during the establishment and growth of the business.
“My interaction with UIA was very good. They were professional, competent, and extremely helpful. They guided us through investment procedures, registration requirements, and legal processes. Their support made it much easier to navigate the system.”
He notes that Uganda remains one of the more accessible destinations for investors seeking to establish businesses in the region.
“Uganda is relatively easy to navigate when it comes to investment processes. You can get things done and move forward with your plans.”
Looking ahead
After years of steady expansion, Murchison River Lodge now boasts more than 20 self-contained accommodation units. Higginson believes sustainable growth, rather than rapid expansion, is the key to long-term success.
“The goal is to reach your potential step by step. You can start with just a few rooms and continue building as the business grows. Once you start generating revenue, you can keep improving and expanding. That’s exactly what we have done.”
The company is already exploring additional tourism investments on its 34-acre property, further strengthening its contribution to Uganda’s tourism industry.
Advice to future investors
Drawing from years of experience, Higginson encourages both local and international investors to consider Uganda as a destination for long-term investment.
“If you have a strong work ethic, stay consistent, and keep pushing forward, you have a very good chance of succeeding.”
He cautions against seeking quick returns and emphasizes patience as a critical ingredient for success.
“Africa, and Uganda in particular, offers very high returns when investments are done properly. If you rush, you crash. The potential here is immense. Uganda is truly one of a kind. Come and invest.”
A model tourism investment
From a modest safari lodge to a multi-million-dollar tourism enterprise, Murchison River Lodge demonstrates what is possible when passion, perseverance, and strategic investment come together.

As Uganda continues to position itself as a premier tourism destination, success stories like Murchison River Lodge highlight the country’s vast opportunities for investors seeking sustainable growth in one of Africa’s most promising sectors.
