In Uganda a ‘Micro Enterprise’ is an enterprise employing up to four people, with an annual sales/revenue turnover or total assets not exceeding Uganda shillings 10 million.

On the other hand Small Enterprises employ between 5 and 49 and have total assets between UGX 10 million but not exceeding 100 million.
The Medium Enterprise therefore, employs between 50 and 100 with total assets more than 100 million but not exceeding 360 million.

The SME Division (SMED) of Uganda Investment Authority supports and facilitates the development of MSMEs who are majorly domestic entrepreneurs.The overall goal of the SME division is: Developing Sustainable Domestic Investments & SMEs

Duration: November 2014 to May 2017

The research project ‘Changing the mindset of Ugandan entrepreneurs: From Muppets to Gazelles‘ aims to contribute to socially inclusive development in eastern Africa by identifying and tackling key constraints on domestic entrepreneurship through social networking, mainly among rural women in Uganda.

It explores where opportunities for domestic entrepreneurship lie, and what assistance strategies could effectively empower aspiring entrepreneurs to grasp these opportunities.

No, UIA links SMEs to Business Development Service Providers who help them to write project proposals.

WHAT TYPE OF SMES DOES UIA PROMOTE ?

UIA promotes legal entities. A legal entity is registered and it trades in legally accepted goods and services. We also hand hold those who are not legally registered to enable them to register.

ARE THERE SOME ENTERPRISES THAT ARE RESTRICTED TO SMES ?

Uganda’s economy is fully liberalised, so there are no restrictions in sectors of Investment except for those that pose a threat to national security.
